Our main strengh
Coulié nursery is located in an important area of walnut and chestnut production (label AOC (Protected Designation of origin) Walnut of Périgord). We have an important collection of European and American chestnut and walnut varieties.
This collection and our work experience allow us to offer the best varieties answering the various economic, cultural, climatic requirements of our customers.
Resistance to pathogens and parasites
Our nursery carries out a particular research effort on resistance to pathogens and parasites in fruit plants.
It is for this purpose that we have forged partnerships with INRA and CTIFL, the French National Institute for Agronomic Research. Advanced scientific means have thus been implemented.
In parallel, we optimized our production method thanks to innovative solutions preserving and combining the performances of both resistant grafted and grafted fruit varieties (see production cycle).
Our results are both very convincing and industrially controlled. This high resistance to pathogens and parasites is the characteristic quality of the walnut and chestnut plants produced by Coulié nurseries.
Here are the parameters on which we base this quality of production:
– Selection of rootstock varieties
– mycorrhization by phytophthora antagonist (ink disease / roots)
– in-vitro propagation
– grafting in green
You can consult the table of typical pathogens and parasites via the menu on the right.
NB: Because of this natural characteristic, it is resistant to pathogens and parasites, our chestnut and walnut plants are particularly suitable for the formation of organic walnut and chestnut orchards, and production of organic nuts and organic chestnuts.
Short production cycle and special multiplication offer
Our incubator uses production methods which have two notable advantages: a delay in plant availability of less than two years (in the absence of disease / parasite and climate hazards) – the best possible rate of grafting / Cuttings and rooting due to the inuvial propagation re-propagation for these walnut and chestnut plants
Special multiplication of fruit plants
Our nursery takes care of any special multiplication orders (cooperative clients, farmers, arborists, investors, nurserymen, processors, resellers …).
Our stock of mother plants is made up of new varieties (new hybrids) produced in large quantities each year and on the other hand, old varieties that we produce in reduced quantity or on request.
On the other hand we can use a catalog of rootstocks adapted to particular geographical regions, being able to offer you an accompaniment to the study of the project and to put into production. (See page via menu on the left)
Third possibility, we can multiply by grafting your local ancient varieties, which we do not have in collection, if you provide us the grafts.
Attention: Currently the health regulations related to Cynips (Dryocosmus kuriphilus), do not allow us to accept external grafts (see Decree of November 22, 2010 below) for benefit number 3.
Since its creation until today, Jean Coulié has constantly improved, created and innovated to offer professionals and individuals adapted and quality products.
In recent years, we have undertaken to reduce the use of chemicals for both plant feeding and phytosanitary aspects. The use of a phytophthora antagonist fungus in the chestnut tree (Pisolithus arhizus = tinctorius) eliminated the treatments against soil fungi. We use organic fertilizers mixed with our substrate and certified organic supplements (Different purines, products of the EQUISETUM range).
We carried out a study for the establishment of an integrated biological protection PBI for the cultivation of greenhouse plants. In addition, the greenhouse surroundings will be developed with plant species capable of housing the future auxiliaries.
Greenhouse seedlings are grown in biodegradable coconut containers, resulting in the development of a more extensive root harem. This improves the maintenance of the root ball and the rate of recovery in the open ground is at higher end.
The strategy we are implementing through these various improvements and improvements aims to obtain in the near future an environmental and social certification type MPS, or blue plant.
The new chestnut and walnut hybrids are certified (virus disease and original variety) and controlled by CTIFL each year.
For the other fruit and ornamental varieties, we have taken a rigorous labelling to identify the origin of plants.
In recent years, our nursery has been requested by walnuts / chestnuts producers and investors in Europe, eastern countries, India and worldwide.
To fill these majors orders, our production volume of walnuts, chestnuts and ornamental plants and seedlings now reach several tens of thousands of plants per year. (see our commercial team)
We provide our customers with a comprehensive support service to launch, starting and sustaining their agricultural and food projects around the world.
Systematically, we signed a contract with customers to follow the plantation and to be confident of plantation success. We implement the same rigor and behavior for all our customers.
We must therefore emphasize that we we have a proven record of managing these type of project. It requires an utmost rigour to address these large number of plants, monitoring transports, set customs and phytosanitary formalities.
This commitment to discipline animates our relationships with our customers and partners.
